By reliving his childhood, Hiroshi gets a second chance at a carefree existence with the added bonus of his knowledge of the future and the maturity of his adult mind. But Quartier Lointain isn’t a work of science-fiction, but of magic realism. The intrigue, at first, revolves around Hiroshi trying to come to grip with this sudden transgression of time, trying to comprehend a dream that seems too real to be one. Upon reaching the tombstone, Hiroshi falls asleep to wake up in his 13 year old self, back to his childhood in his hometown of years past.

Quartier Lointain, written by Jirō Taniguchi, is the story of a middle-aged family and salary man named Hiroshi Nakahara, who travels alone to his hometown to pay respect to the grave of his mother. I shall refer to the work’s French title since that’s the language in which I read the manga and am intimate with in my memories. That being said, comics in France (and more broadly in the Francophone world) is rich and diverse, I’ll probably write about it someday, don’t take the previous as a slight against what BD has to offer. While I can’t recall exactly the first manga title I ever began to read (probably Dragon Ball), Quartier Lointain ( A Distant Neighborhood) is the first manga title, or even graphic novel for that matter, that made a deep impression on me so much so I’m writing about it well over 10 years later. At that time I had been reading what was fashionable for a young boy my age in France, bande dessinée such as Titeuf and Le Petit Spirou (mostly gags about growing up into puberty) and Lanfeust de Troy, an action fantasy series with the violence and sexual titillation supplying the stimulation craved by my pre-adolescent psyche. In 1997, he created the Ikaru (Icarus) series with texts by Mœbius. My first introduction to manga must have been while in my first year of middle school. The later received awards at the Angoulême International Comics Festival in 20. He illustrated Baku Yumemakura’s works, Garouden from 1989-1990 and Kamigami no itadaki ( The Summit of the Gods) from 2000 to 2003. In 1980-1983, he collaborated with Garon Tsuchiya for the manga Blue Fighter ( 青の戦士, Ao no Senshi), Knuckle Wars ( ナックル・ウォーズ, Nakkuru Wōzu) and Live! Odyssey ( LIVE! オデッセイ). In the 1990s, he came up with several albums, among which Aruku Hito ( 歩くひと), Chichi no Koyomi ( 父の暦), and Hitobito Shirīzu: Keyaki no Ki ( 人びとシリーズ「けやきのき」). From 1987 to 1996, Taniguchi and Natsuo Sekigawa produced the 5-volume series Botchan no Jidai. He made his manga debut in 1970 with Kareta Heya (A Desiccated Summer), published in the magazine Young Comic.įrom 1978 to 1986, he created several hard-boiled comics with the scenarist Natsuo Sekigawa, such as City Without Defense, The Wind of the West is White and Lindo 3.
