Here’s hoping you have a very Happy Debut Year!! These are such small moments, but I found that they grounded me. It meant so much for me to see it on the shelf! My gram, who my debut is dedicated to, was a librarian. Yes, I loved seeing my book at the bookstore, but finding it at the library made me even happier. (Oh, and reading the other debuts’ ARCs was a bonus!) Even though it’s not always easy for me, I made a point to reach out to people, and a few of them have become my dearest friends. It was so fun getting to know one another and building friendships. Joining the Novel 19s debut group was one of the best things I ever did. When I wrote The Bone Garden, I didn’t know anyone else in the writing community. Trust your designer and artist, but also talk to your agent/editor if you do have any suggestions/concerns. I loved being able to see the bone garden through someone else’s eyes, and I’m so thankful for their creativity. However, the artist (Matt Saunders) and the cover designer (Kate Klimowicz) came up with a perspective I had never envisioned, having the characters standing in the hollow of the dead oak. My editor and I had discussed the scene that would be used for the cover, so I had a general idea of how I thought it might look-Irréelle stepping into the above side of the graveyard for the very first time. My editor and I always talk after I read over the letter, and if your editor offers this too, take them up on it! Someone who had thoughtfully (and clearly) explored the ways to improve it. Here was someone who believed in my writing. Ha! There was a lot of work to be done, but all those comments (the kind words about what he loved as well as the areas for revision) showed me how well he understood the story. I think my editor was surprised by my enthusiastic response to getting my first edit letter. You’ve worked so hard to get where you are, and you should enjoy it as much as you can!Ī few of the things that made me happiest: My best advice is to take note of those things (big or small) that make you happy. There is so much anticipation (and stress) leading up to your debut, and I don’t want to gloss over that, but there are also so many things to be grateful for.
